Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting, is a natural and effective procedure that uses your body's own fat to restore volume, smooth wrinkles, and rejuvenate the skin. A specialized form of this treatment, called Nanofat injection, uses highly refined fat to address fine lines and improve skin quality. These minimally invasive procedures offer a cutting-edge approach to skin rejuvenation, harnessing the regenerative power of your own cells.
While both treatments use your own fat, they serve different purposes.
Fat Transfer (or Microfat): This procedure involves transferring small amounts of fat from one area of the body (like the abdomen or thighs) to another, typically the face. It is excellent for restoring lost volume in areas like the cheeks, temples, or under the eyes, providing a structural lift and a more youthful contour.
Nanofat Injections: This is an advanced technique where the harvested fat is specially processed and filtered to create an injectable liquid rich in growth factors and stromal vascular fraction (SVF), which contains a high concentration of stem cells. Nanofat is not used for adding volume. Instead, its purpose is regenerative. It stimulates collagen and elastin production, improves skin texture, and revitalizes thinning or sun-damaged skin.
The Nanofat process is a meticulous, multi-step procedure performed in our office.
Anesthesia and Fat Aspiration: The treatment begins with the application of local anesthetic to the donor area. A small amount of fat is then gently harvested using a fine cannula.
Processing and Filtering: The collected fat is then carefully filtered and emulsified through specialized cartridges. This process breaks down the fat cells but preserves the valuable growth factors, proteins, and stem cells.
Injection: The resulting Nanofat liquid is then skillfully injected into the superficial layers of the skin in the targeted treatment areas to promote regeneration and improve skin quality.
Nanofat’s regenerative properties make it an ideal solution for a variety of skin concerns. Its most common applications include:
Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Especially effective for treating very fine lines, such as smoker's lines around the lips (perioral rhytids) and delicate skin around the eyes.
Thinning and Dehydrated Skin: Rejuvenates thinning skin on the forehead, neck, and décolletage by stimulating new collagen and improving skin density.
Sun Damage: Helps repair and reverse skin damage caused by sun exposure.
Scars: Improves the appearance of scars by promoting tissue regeneration.
Hair Restoration: Has shown promising results in improving hair growth for individuals with early-stage alopecia (thinning hair) by nourishing the scalp and hair follicles.
Nanofat can also be used in combination with other treatments like microneedling or skin resurfacing to enhance overall results.
While both Nanofat and PRP are regenerative treatments, they work differently. PRP primarily increases blood supply to the tissue and contains a smaller concentration of growth factors. Nanofat, on the other hand, contains a much richer supply of stem cells and growth factors that are highly effective at stimulating collagen and elastin regeneration, leading to more significant improvements in skin quality and structure.
Recently, Nanofat has become a key treatment in regenerative medicine, showing efficacy not only in skin rejuvenation and hair restoration but also in areas like cartilage regeneration for degenerative joint conditions.
